During the first half term, students had the opportunity to write ‘Love Letters’ to Jersey, talking about the landscapes on our island whilst aiming to improve literacy rates. This exciting project is being led by the published poet Karl Murphy. The idea is to make a sculpture of students’ work from different schools, highlighting how special Jersey is as an island and store it in the Jersey Archives. This project ties into the students own topic of ‘urban and rural environments’ currently being studied in Geography.
One student wrote about their experience; “We started by playing a game where we had to link words together starting from a random object. Emilie then read a poem that she had written about St Brelade’s beach before we had the opportunity to write our own poems. We had to think of somewhere special to us. Some other students brought in pictures of Jersey War Tunnels or a fish they had caught off St Catherine’s Breakwater to write about. The activity was fun and made us think about Jersey’s Geography but also our English skills when writing poems.”
Thank you to Emilie and Karl for supporting our students and offering them the opportunity to be part of such an interesting island wide project.
